Monkeying Around
charcoal on paper, 18" x 24"

Monkeying Around was my way of bringing to life a sock monkey I had made back in fourth grade. For this project, I was prompted to design a character and to make multuple iterations of that character in one specific environment. I was tasked with creating a space with both a consistent perspective as well as a narrative that aligned with the theme of my character design.

Inspired by the concept of the Three Wise Monkeys, I created three versions of my sock monkey—one that cannot see, one that cannot speak, and one that cannot hear. I placed these sock monkeys in a playground setting in order to express the playfulness of the sock monkey I had created in my youth as well as to demonstrate the sort of blind innocence that accompanies childhood.
